Urban Surfaces Research Network workshop in Uppsala, Sweden: Art, Advertising, and Methods of Surfacing the City

27-28 August 2026

Uppsala University, Sweden

That’s a wrap for our seminar series funded by the Urban Studies Foundation, with “Art, advertising, and methods of surfacing the city” hosted by Tom Ward at Uppsala University.

Seventeen researchers and practitioners from around the world joined us in Uppsala for two days in August to discuss our shared empirical interest in urban surfaces and to consolidate our thinking around the main themes of the network: communication, governance, ecology, labour, materiality, and economy.

We were also lucky to welcome Axel Fremling, the Uppsala municipal buffer, for a presentation and a walk in the city.

Thank you to Tom for the super hosting and to all our participants:
